Where did the years all go?
Where is that little girl with puffy cheeks?
Sitting in the baby swing?
Do you know?
She was rocking in her little chair,
Now I can't find her anywhere.
All the Barbie dolls and saddle shoes
Are packaged in unlabled tombs
As pictures of what's been smile at me
And, when I look in the mirror, that's not what I see.
Why do the seasons change?
Where is that child with her big mistakes,
All the old regrets that she couldn't shake?
Why can't I contain
The memories that slip so fast
Of laughter, friends, and Christmas past?
And all the Barbie dolls and saddle shoes
Are packaged in unlabled tombs
As pictures of what's been smile at me
And, when I look in the mirror, that's not what I see.
And I see more than a sum
Yet I see hints of the years gone by
Between the ironed folds
Of grown-up's clothes,
In the sparkle of a woman's eye.
And where the years all went
May be the question at the end
Of pages tiny fingers turned,
Lessons that my young hands learn,
Evidence that I'm still trying
To figure out how time ought to be spent,
But it's a gift.
